The Webb Team Wins
Flight C GNT Teams The team captained by Chris Webb won the District 7 GNT Flight - C Team competition in Anderson, S.C. May 2, 1999. Chris played with his wife Lee. This is their first major victory. The other pair was formed just for this competition - Elizabeth Beckwith and Andy Hurd (aged 17). Elizabeth has returned to a more active bridge life now that her two children are out of the toddler stage. She and Chris nearly won a Fighlt C berth in the Nationals in the North American Open Pairs - they were 4th and the top 3 pairs won a trip. Next year Elizabeth and Chris will be inelegible for Flight C, having recently made Life Master. Lee, who has taken up the game seriously, now plays regularly with her husband Chris. Elizabeth, Lee, and Chris, live near each other in a Columbia suburb and wanted to play in the Flt-C Teams, but needed a 4th. Chris's folks, Bob and Pat Webb suggested Andy, who lives in Charleston. Andy has been playing for about a year, and in tournaments he has been very active for about 5 months. He has won 3 Open Pairs in Sectionals and one Sectional Swiss. Last week the team played as a unit and won the 2nd Bracket at the Camden Sectional- good practice for the District Championship at Anderson this week. Chris's parents Bob and Pat Webb won a trip to the nationals a few years ago in the GNT (Flt B). Andy's dad, Spencer Hurd also won Flight B and went to the nationals finishing 5-8th. John Hurd, Andy's brother won the District Flight C also a few years ago with Columbia friends and finished 3/4th in the nation. The young team (average age about 26) is following in family footsteps! |

Don't Give Up - Don't
Ever Give Up Another good story from the flight C teams. The Doster Team also had an interesting route to the finals. They lost rounds one and two, then the opponents didn't show for round three. In round four they were blitzed. Discouraged yet? Only 26 VP for four rounds. No, they won rounds five & six big, qualified and finished third (in a play off for 3/4). In flight B, Sharon Hitson made Life Master when she made it to the semi-finals. |
