Our Atlanta Junior Bridge students played well in the Grand National Teams
(GNT) last weekend in Morganton, NC. Congratulations to the team
of Zandy Rizzo, Murphy Green, Angie Green, Arjun Dhir, Andrew Jeng and
Richard Jeng for placing third Saturday which qualified them for the Flight
C semi-finals Sunday in the Grand National Teams. The Dhir team finished
3/4.
The team of Ricoh Das, Karan Vohra, William Dang, and Jimmy Fordham placed
fifth on Saturday. Coming from behind at the half, they barely missed
qualifying. Another 3VP's would have won them a place in the playoffs.
Well done and congratulations to everyone. Not only did you play
well, but your behavior, skill, and demeanor was commented upon throughout
the tournament, earning good marks for young bridge players everywhere.
Zandy, Murphy, Angie, Arjun, Ricoh, Karan and William are from Alpharetta
and currently attend classes taught by Carolyn and Lee Eckert. Andrew
and Richard are from Johns Creek and are taught by Marty Nathan at the
ADBC and by Lola Sliom. Many of the players are graduates of AJB's
Summer Camps taught by Nancy Watkins and Patty Tucker, and all still attend
summer camps on a regular basis. Jenni and Tom Carmichael have been
working on Precision with Zandy, Murphy, Andrew, Richard and Arjun at the
Alpharetta Bridge Club. Thank you to all of the teachers, assistants
and subs that share a part in their success.

MID-ATLANTIC SEEKS SOMEONE TO STORE AND TRANSPORT TABLES
The Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference Finance Committee is in the process
of accepting bids for moving tables to our various tournaments in District
Six. A total of about 350 card tables need to be stored and then
up to 325 of them need to be transported to and from the four regionals
held annually in the District. In 2007 these tournaments will be held in Richmond, VA, North Bethesda, MD, Hunt Valley, MD and Virginia Beach, VA.
We would prefer one person to take care of both storage and transportation,
but are willing to consider offers for performing only one of the two activities.
Anyone interested should contact Fred King, the subcommittee chairperson,
at fredmking@gmail.com |

Once again the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference ran
the biggest and the best regionals in ACBL land. We had eight of
the 20 most popular regionals in 2004, and perennial ACBL record-setter
Gatlinburg more than doubled the attendance of the second place tournament,
Las Vegas.
In 2003, there were 14 ACBL regionals with 2,000-plus
tables, four from the Mid-Atlantic (Nbrs. 1, 3, 4 & 9). This year there
were 19 regionals with 2,000-plus tables, and the MABC had seven of them,
with Virginia Beach just barely missing ... another two tables a day, and
they'd have made it.
There were 10 Mid-Atlantic regionals in 2004, totaling
a record 30,807 tables.
1. Gatlinburg (April) ............ 8,208 (record)
2. Las Vegas (June) .............. 3,989
3. Hunt Valley (August) .......... 3,504 (record)
4. Atlanta (September) ........... 3,436 (record)
5. Hilton Head (February) ........ 3,348
6. Sarasota (February) ........... 3,321
7. Penticton (June) .............. 3,147
8. Orlando (January) ............. 2,886
9. Palm Springs (December) ....... 2,885
10. Houston (February) ............ 2,748
11. Alexandria (July) ............. 2,490
12. Lancaster (October) ........... 2,426
13. Raleigh (May) ................. 2,372 (record)
14. Santa Clara (September) ....... 2,336
15. Charleston (December) ......... 2,243 (record)
16. Toronto (April) ............... 2,184
17. Rye, NY (January) ..... ....... 2,067
18. Mesa, AZ seniors (April) ...... 2,059
19. Sacramento (June) ............. 2,017
20. Virginia Beach (November) ..... 1,988
The Mid-Atlantic made its mark in sectionals, too,
with District 7 continuing a long string of topping the ACBL in the number
of tournaments; total attendance; and silver points won.
This year's figures were 14,662 tables in 63 sectionals.
This does not include the thousands of participants in numerous STaCs.
Atlanta sectionals of 917, 856 and 729 tables ranked
Nbrs. 3, 4 and 6 for the year in North America. Two weeklong sectionals
in Las Vegas annually draw 1,000-plus tables.
Individually, Susanne McLaughlin of Charleston nipped
her husband, Mark, for the ACBL sectional points championship. They totaled
466 and 465 sectional points. This is the fourth year in the past five
that Charleston players have finished one-two in the ACBL silver point
race: Mark had two points more than Susanne in 2000, and Richard Guarneri
bested John Hurd in both 2001 and '02. Richard finished third this year. |

2003 District 7 sectional report
Charleston-area tournament players loosened their grip on the ACBL`s silver
point race in 2003, but South Carolinians continued to dominate sectional
competition both in the district and throughout North America. Susanne
and Mark McLaughlin led the way, their totals placing third and fourth
in the ACBL, and Wayne Hollingsworth and Richard Brown weren`t far behind,
finishing sixth and seventh. Charleston players had won the ACBL silver
point competition for the previous three years: Mark McLaughlin in 2000,
and Richard Guarneri in both 2001 and 2002.
The most impressive single tournament results were logged by partners Kevin
Collins and Patty Tucker in the year-ending Atlanta tournament. They won
all five team events that they entered, worth 69.29 points each. Overall,
there was a resurgence in sectional tournament interest, with this year`s
attendance showing greater than a 10 percent increase over last year`s,
and in one less tournament. All-time attendance records were set for tournaments
in Atlanta, Morganton and Knoxville. As it has for a long time, District
7 led the ACBL in overall attendance and number of sectionals. Here are
our district`s top silver point winners. All of those listed ranked in
the ACBL-wide top 200.
To look at winners and other information concerning sectional tournaments
held in the MABC go to our Sectional Tournament Repots Section.

Did You Know?
Using Print Preview to limit the number of pages to print.
Have you ever wanted to print out some info from one of our web pages but
did not want all the printed pages?
Here is a solution that should work for you:
Under your File Menu there should be a "Print Preview...". Use
this to preview the web page and it will show you the web page with page
numbers as it would print on your selected printer. You can "page"
forward until you get to the printer page or pages you are interested in.
You can also switch to "Lancscape" mode which makes the page
wider than it is tall. Then select print and specify just those pages
you want to print.

Mini-McKenney / Ace of Clubs Masterpoint Races
The ACBL website ( http://www.acbl.org ) now has "up-to-date" standings for both the yearly Mini-McKenney
and Ace of Clubs masterpoint races for each unit posted. Click here to go to that page ( use browser back arrow to return here) and type in your unit number
to check out the races for your unit. At present these races are
updated on an irregular basis, but there are plans to update them every
month. These updates will probably take place sometimes between the
10th and 15th of the month.

Attention:
Club Owners, Managers, Players
|
| Please take a look at the listings for your club on the MABC Club pages and if they are not up-to-date send in corrections. We would especially
like to be able to add an e-mail address for the contact for each club
as the site quite often gets request for these. In addition, if you
have a page on the internet where information about the club is listed
be sure to enclose that information and a link will be added to the
other club information.
Send information by e-mail by clicking here.

Attention: Unit Officers
There are still several units for which we do not have a list of Unit Officers.
Please see note at bottom of page on how to submit information to this
web site.

Feedback:
We need your input for this page!!! If you know of something that you think
would interest people in the MABC you can e-mail it to the MABC Webmanager (click here to email). It does not have to directly bridge related, but should be of interest
of bridge players.
