NADINE WOOD
When Nadine Wood died on August 9, 2011, the ACBL, the Mid-Atlantic Bridge
Conference, District 6 and the Washington Bridge League lost one of its
most valued and hardest working volunteers. She was Tournament Chairperson at the national, regional and local level
and you knew that when she was in charge, unparalleled hospitality would
be enjoyed by all. She was tireless when it came to working to be sure that others had a good
time. She chaired the Washington, DC NABCs in [years] and numerous regionals
and sectionals. She held numerous elective offices as well. She was past president (1983-86) and treasurer of the WBL, president of
the MABC (1990-92), a member of the ACBL board of governors, of which she
was chair from 1990-92, and for18 years from 1992-2010 she was the director
from District 6 to the ACBL board. She was especially passionate about supporting women’s bridge and was a
member of the Women’s International Team Trials Committee from its inception.
Nadine was a wonderful friend and outgoing, but at the same time she had
strong opinions and firm beliefs and was not afraid to let you know how
she felt. But she could disagree without being disagreeable, and she never carried
a grudge.
Nadine was not just a volunteer and worker, she was also a fine player
and was a Grand Life Master having won the Whitehead Women’s Pairs in 1989
and had 11,682 points at the time of her death. Nadine was born June 13, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa but moved to DC in 1974. She and Roland had 2 children, Dana and Greg, and 5 grandchildren. All of us in her bridge family feel a deep sense of loss and we will miss
her greatly. She set standards for service that the rest can only try to emulate.
